What to Expect:
The antlers of bulls within this area have an average size of 60 inches. However, we have been seeing bull antlers reach up to 70 inches in the last few years.

Unit 17 – The Prime Hunting Ground:
Unit 17, located in southwestern Alaska, is renowned for its robust moose population and stunning natural scenery. The area encompasses a diverse landscape of lush wetlands, dense forests, and expansive tundra, offering quintessential Alaskan geography. The combined richness of the moose population and the challenging yet awe-inspiring terrain make Unit 17 a coveted destination for moose hunters.

The Alaska Moose Hunting Experience:
Moose hunting with High Cache Alaskan Outfitters typically involves traversing a mix of terrains tailored to the habits of these majestic creatures. Moose, known for their impressive size, can be elusive, so the expertise provided by Gust Tunguing Jr and his team is invaluable in tracking and locating these animals. Hunters must be prepared for physically demanding conditions and should be equipped for various weather scenarios, as Alaskan weather can be unpredictable.

Physical Readiness:
Hunting in Alaska's wilderness requires a good level of physical fitness. The terrain can be demanding, with long hikes often needed to reach prime hunting spots. Prospective hunters should engage in regular physical training, including cardio and strength exercises, to ensure they're up to the challenge.

Familiarization with Hunting Regulations:
Alaska's hunting regulations are strict to preserve the wildlife populations and ensure sustainable hunting practices. Hunters must familiarize themselves with these rules, including licensing requirements, tag regulations, and ethical hunting practices. High Cache Alaskan Outfitters assists in guiding clients through these regulations to ensure all legalities are appropriately handled.

The Hunting Trip Experience:
The group is expected to wake up at around 5 to 5:30 AM for breakfast and coffee. After our meal, we will head out to call moose at first light. We'll go to all our calling spots. It could take up to three days of moose calling before a bull responds. We’ll head back to camp at noon for lunch. After eating, the group can either go fishing or rest. Supper will be served at around 4:30 PM so we can leave camp by 5:30 PM to hit our moose-calling spots in the dark.

Preparing for the Adventure:
Preparation is key to a successful and enjoyable moose hunt. High Cache Alaskan Outfitters ensures that all hunters are well-prepared before embarking on their journey. Here’s what you can expect and what you need to consider before your trip:

Tracking and Stalking:
Tracking and stalking moose involves understanding their feeding and mating behaviors. During the rut, which occurs in September, bull moose are particularly active and can be more easily called in. Patience and silence are critical, as these trophy bull moose have keen senses and are easily spooked. Strategic positioning and keen observation are vital. We must be vigilant and ready to take a shot at the opportune moment. The team ensures that hunters have a thorough understanding of shot placement and safety.

Success and Field Dressing:
Once a moose is successfully harvested, the process of field dressing begins immediately to preserve the meat and prepare it for transport. This involves gutting, skinning, and quartering the moose.

Ensuring a Memorable Experience:
High Cache Alaskan Outfitters is dedicated to making the moose hunting experience memorable beyond just the hunt itself. The outfitting service is synonymous with excellent customer service, local storytelling, and imparting deep knowledge about the Alaskan wilderness. Every moment, from the preparation to the hunt and post-hunt activities, is orchestrated to enhance the hunters' connection with the wild and leave them memories that will last a lifetime.
